WWJ-TV rebrands as CBS 62

CBS 62CBS owned-and-operated WWJ-TV in Detroit discontinued the use of the “WWJ-TV” branding on Thursday. WWJ-TV now brands itself as “CBS 62.” The CBS 62 branding includes a new logo.

From 1995 to 2001, the station was branded as “Detroit’s 62 CBS.” In 2002, the station rebranded as “CBS Detroit” in order to minimize the promotion of a high channel number. The CBS Detroit branding was dropped in 2008 and replaced with the WWJ-TV call letters.

Don Shane retires from WXYZ after 23 years

Don ShaneVeteran sports anchor Don Shane retired from WXYZ (Channel 7) in Detroit after 23 years with the station.

After more than 38 years interviewing sports celebrities and covering every major sporting event from the Super Bowl to the NBA finals, 7 ACTION NEWS Sports Director Don Shane will retire from WXYZ in March.

Before joining WXYZ-TV in 1989, Shane worked at WBZ-TV in Boston, WMAQ-TV in Chicago and WDIV-TV in Detroit. He has received numerous awards for his reporting including 23 Michigan Emmy Awards, a best sports anchor honor, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle Award, as well as awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. During his sports career in Detroit, he also served as the play-by-play announcer for Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and the Detroit Pistons.

Uhl named GM of WADL in Detroit

WADLMatt Uhl is now the vice president and general manager at Adell Broadcasting’s WADL (Channel 38) in Detroit.

Matt Uhl has been named vice president and general manager at WADL Detroit, an independent station. Uhl spent 16 years at WHP Harrisburg, including a run as general manager.

Uhl was also director of sales at Fox affiliate WPMT Harrisburg, and worked at KCRA Sacramento as well. He succeeds Steve Antoniotti.

Adell Broadcasting owns WADL, which has shifted from calling itself “Detroit’s Urban Station” to a broader reach.

WADL to start 9 p.m. newscast

WADLWADL (Channel 38) in Detroit will launch a weekday evening newscast at 9 p.m. starting on January 16. The half-hour long newscast will be produced with Journal Register Company, a company who owns newspapers in Southeast Michigan.

WADL-Channel 38 will debut “News @ 9,” a new weekday 9 p.m. newscast, on Jan. 16.

The 30-minute newscast is being produced with Journal Register Co., a company whose holdings include The Oakland Press, The Macomb Daily, the Daily Tribune of Royal Oak, the Morning Sun in Mt. Pleasant and all the Heritage newspapers in Southeast Michigan. The newspapers will provide news reporting and streaming video.

“Our footprint in Southeast Michigan matches up very well with WADL-TV 38 in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties,” Kevin Haezebroeck, senior vice president of Journal Register newspapers in Michigan, said in a statement.

Nielsen releases new rankings for DMAs

NielsenNielsen released new rankings for local television markets. The Detroit, Lansing and Alpena markets did not change. Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Marquette moved down one spot. Flint moved up one spot in the rankings.

WADL adds Antenna TV

Antenna TVWADL in Detroit will launch Antenna TV on its .2 multicast channel on October 1.

Adell Broadcasting’s Independent WADL Detroit is readying a launch of Antenna TV on its dot .2 multicast channel beginning 10/1. Antenna TV will bring additional classic TV programs, including “The Flying Nun,” “The Monkees,” “The Partridge Family,” “All in The Family,” “Maude” and “Soap.”

Kevin Adell, CEO and owner of WADL, who also owns “The Word Network” (the largest African-American religious network in the world), explains: “We have looked at many programming options for our .2, but ‘Antenna TV’ was by far the best fit with its quality classic programming lineup, expansive national distribution with Tribune stations and will have the longevity over fledgling networks.”

Locally, “Antenna TV” will be available on channel 38.2 and channel 295 on Comcast Cable.

WXYZ taps #backchannel to make good news

WXYZWXYZ (Channel 7) in Detroit is using social media to help clean up the city.

Don’t just complain about sad news – do something about it! That’s what viewers of and staffers from WXYZ in Detroit did, using the power of social media in the community. Using the Twitter hashtag #backchannel and Facebook, a group of more than a hundred people gathered to help clean up Detroit. The group partnered with Motor City Blight Busters, a non-profit dedicated to cleaning up the city. On Saturday, June 25, in concert with Motor City Blight Busters, the #backchannel volunteers, according to WXYZ, helped “take down an old building, clear a vacant eyesore and clean up a playground.”

Hally Vogel to join WXYZ in Detroit

Hally VogelMeteorologist Hally Vogel is leaving Gannett’s WZZM (Channel 13) in Grand Rapids for E.W. Scripps’ WXYZ (Channel 7) in Detroit.

WZZM-TV (Channel 13) meteorologist Hally Vogel is leaving the Grand Rapids-based ABC-TV affiliate to join the staff at WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) the ABC-TV affiliate in Detroit.

Vogel leaves West Michigan for the Motor City, the 11th largest broadcast market in the United States and the station where Detroit’s legendary meteorologist Jerry Hodak spent most of his 45 years of broadcasting before retiring last September.

Tuesday will be Vogel’s final day at WZZM-TV.

“I am thrilled about the opportunity to move closer to my family in the Detroit area, but sad to leave so many friends and great people that I’ve gotten to know during my time here in Grand Rapids,” Vogel said. “I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and overwhelming support.”

Bomb scare forces WDIV off the air

WDIVPost-Newsweek’s WDIV in Detroit was evacuated last night after a suspicious package was found in the station’s foyer.

Police and firefighters spent hours Thursday at the WDIV-TV studios downtown, responding to a report of a suspicious package that temporarily forced the station off the air for its 11 p.m. news broadcast.

Anchor Devin Scillian was posting tweets from a bus where staff had been evacuated.

“Very odd trying to figure out a newscast right now … No access to the newsroom or studio,” he tweeted around 10:30 p.m. “This is a new one.”

The all-clear was issued after 11:15 p.m., when Channel 4 began to broadcast again. No injuries were reported.
