WOOD-TV morning news to start at 4:30 A.M.

LIN Media’s WOOD-TV (Channel 8 ) in Grand Rapids will launch a 4:30 A.M. newscast on Monday, April 30. The announcement comes a few days after market rival WWMT started a 4:30 A.M. newscast on April 23.

Beginning Monday, April 30, 24 Hour News 8 Daybreak will begin at 4:30 a.m.

“We’re responding to changes in viewers’ habits being seen all over the country. 24 Hour News 8 Daybreak is West Michigan’s #1 morning show,” said WOOD TV8 News Director Rebecca Sapakie. “Our entire team will be here ready to go at 4:30 a.m. We’re committed to making sure our viewers are prepared for the day with the latest overnight news, big stories still ahead and the Storm Team 8 forecast.”

Schieber leaves WOOD-TV for job outside of TV

Anne SchieberAnne Schieber has left WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids for a job at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

After 14 years at Grand Rapids NBC-affiliate WOOD, reporter Anne Schieber has left television to join the Mackinac Center for Public Policy as a senior investigative analyst.

In a statement announcing her hire, Schieber said the move was a natural step from her reporting position at WOOD.

“My goal as a reporter has always been to take what is important and make it interesting, not the other way around,” she said. “I look forward to investigating complex policy issues and showing how they impact people’s lives.”

WOOD-TV upgrades to HD news

WOOD-TV HDLIN Media’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids upgraded their newscasts to high definition. WOOD-TV is the third television station in the West Michigan DMA to make the switch to HD.

After months of behind-the-scenes work and preparation, 24 Hour News 8 on WOOD TV8 is now in high definition.

The first HD broadcast was 24 Hour News 8 at 6 on Saturday.

“What we do for our viewers isn’t changing. 24 Hour News 8 will continue to lead the way in breaking news, investigative reporting and severe weather coverage” said 24 Hour News 8 News Director Rebecca Sapakie. “Only now it will be in high definition.”

WOOD-TV welcomes Marlee Ginter

Marlee GinterMarlee Ginter is the new co-anchor of WOOD-TV’s weekday 10 p.m. newscast. She will anchor the newscast with Brian Sterling. The 10 p.m. newscast airs on WOOD-TV sister-station WXSP.

Marlee Ginter, who recently left her post as weekend morning anchor at KOMO, is set to debut as co-anchor of WOOD’s weekday 10 p.m. newscast, alongside Brian Sterling.

According to the Grand Rapids Press, Ginter began reporting for WOOD’s 5, 6, and 11 p.m. newscasts this week and will be at the 10 p.m. anchor desk beginning on Monday.

Before her time with KOMO, Ginter worked as a reporter for WSPA in Spartanburg, SC, where she was named “Reporter of the Year” by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association for her investigative reporting.

LIN stations return to Mediacom cable systems

MediacomLIN Media and Mediacom reached a retransmission consent agreement. WOOD-TV and WOTV are now available on Mediacom cable systems in West Michigan.

Mediacom Communications announced late Friday that it had reached a retransmission consent agreement with LIN Media that resulted in the immediate restoration of nine LIN stations to Mediacom’s cable systems.

The stations: WALA/WFNA Mobile, Ala.-Pensacola, Fla.; WANE Fort Wayne, Ind.; , WTHI Terre Haute, Ind.; WOOD/WOTV Grand Rapids-Battle Creek, Mich.; WAVY/WVBT Portsmouth-Norfolk, Va., and WLUK Green Bay, Wis.

LIN stations go dark on Mediacom cable

MediacomLIN Media and Mediacom have failed to reach a retransmission consent agreement. As a result, NBC affiliate WOOD-TV and ABC affiliate WOTV are not available to Mediacom subscribers in West Michigan.

The retransmission consent spat between LIN and Mediacom has resulted in several LIN stations going dark for Mediacom subscribers. The affected stations are WALA-WFNA Mobile-Pensacola, WOOD-WOTV Grand Rapids, WANE Ft. Wayne, WLUK Green Bay, WTHI Terre Haute and WLFI Lafayette (Ind.).

LIN says it has given Mediacom a one week extension for WAVY and WVBT in Norfolk “so affected viewers can still receive our local news coverage of Hurricane Irene,” said LIN in a statement.

“LIN Media is demanding a huge increase in the fees that Mediacom pays to carry their stations,” said Mediacom in a statement titled Why LIN Media Has Pulled Their Stations From Your Mediacom Channel Lineup. “We believe we have a duty to our customers to try and reach a fair deal with LIN that keeps costs reasonable, especially given these extremely difficult economic times.”

Suzanne Geha receives standing ovation at GVSU

Suzanne GehaSuzanne Geha received a standing ovation after introducing Anne Doyle at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhardt Center. This is Geha’s first public appearance following her departure from WOOD-TV.

There have been a number of recent shake-ups at local television news stations in West Michigan, and for the first time since her controversial departure, one of those news anchors is making a public appearance.Suzanne Geha and her former employer, WOOD-TV parted ways last month. WOOD-TV confirmed Geha was no longer an employee with a terse statement, but offered no explanation as to why.

Tuesday morning, Geha introduced Anne Doyle at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhardt Center, where she received a standing ovation.

Doyle was the first woman ever to anchor news in Grand Rapids, working at WZZM-TV 13 in the early 1970s. Her book is titled, Powering Up! How America’s Women Achievers Become Leaders. Doyle says it’s about skills women need to master to become leaders. Something she says her friend will be dealing with soon.

Where is Suzanne Geha?

Veteran news anchor Suzanne Geha has been missing from LIN Media’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids for several weeks. Her biography is no longer listed on the station’s staff bios page. A cached version of her bio is still available thanks to Google. Did Suzanne Geha leave WOOD-TV?

Geha’s quiet disappearance from WOOD-TV coincides with Judy Markee’s announced departure from WWMT. Markee, another veteran news anchor in the West Michigan TV market, will leave WWMT at the end of May after 22 years with the station.

Could Geha resurface at WWMT as Markee’s replacement? WWMT has a history of hiring former WOOD-TV staffers, including Tom Van Howe. Van Howe produces a weekly commentary segment called “Tom’s Corner,” which airs every Thursday during the 5:30 p.m. newscast on WWMT.

Jordan Carson joins WOOD-TV

Jordan CarsonJordan Carson has joined LIN Media’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids as a full-time staff member. Carson was the 2009 winner of the “Face of 4″ contest on WOTV.

Jordan Carson, 2009′s winner of WOTV’s “Face of 4” contest, is now a full-time staff member at WOOD-TV (Channel 8).

Carson’s new role will be the on-air talent for special projects, which have yet to be revealed.

“We’re just kind of collaborating and putting ideas together and working on some really big projects that will hopefully be coming up in the near future,” she said.

She also will be doing segments and fill-in work for “eightWest” (11 a.m. weekdays, WOOD-TV), a lifestyle show for women with co-hosts Rachael Ruiz and Terri DeBoer, and live events.

Dee Morrison leaves WOOD-TV

Dee MorrisonReporter Dee Morrison is leaving LIN Media’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids to become a stay-at-home mom.

Dee Morrison announced today she is leaving WOOD-TV (Channel 8 ) to become a stay-at-home mom to her son, Grady.

She made the announcement on “Daybreak,” TV8′s morning show where she had been a reporter since 1998.

She left the station for a few years, but returned in 2003. Today was her last day.

Morrison is married to WOOD-TV8′s political reporter and “To the Point” host Rick Albin. He will remain at the station in his current capacity.
